Brytyjski historyk i dziennikarz, autor m. in. Sex, Death and Punishment (1990), The MacMillans (1992), Gothic (1998), Auden (1995), Proust at the Majestic (2006). Publikuje w czasopismach „The New York Times”, „The Times Literary Supplement”, „Sunday Times” oraz „The Independent”. Jest członkiem Royal Historical Society, a także laureatem Wolfson Prize w dziedzinie historii. Mieszka w Londynie.
